Tawny Owl Class Blog
Week 5
We've been working hard on our division this week and how it fits into our timetables. Using manipulatives, the children are learning to divide (share) numbers equally. In History we have explored what space travel has done for us and what we use today (space blankets and solar panels) as a result of space exploration. We have designed a 'flyer' in English for the famous Phoenix Meteor Shower - explaining what a meteor shower is and using powerful adjectives to persuade people to come see it. The children have been training hard for the cross-country and I'm sure we will do well.
Keep it up with TT rockstars as there is a class challenge this Easter. I understand that there will be a prize for the class who achieves the most.
Week 4
What a great day! Sunshine and dancing! Tawny Owl were amazing - great dancing and great support where it was needed.
The afternoon was spent exploring chalk and oil pastels after looking closely at the moon's surface.
And these are the final results - some to be finished - but great observations of the colour and texture of the moon.
Please continue to practice the 2,5 and 10 times tables at home and tricky words will come home on Friday to learn.
This week we discussed creating something to commemorate the day of the Moon Landing and everyone designed a stamp. Next week we will think about whether we should explore space. We read about Mae Jameison and have begun to think about writing a biography for the character in our book Look Up!
Space
We started our unit learning about how the astronauts made it to the moon and why they wanted to risk their lives to get there. We continued to look at Apollo 11 and how the three astronauts got into space, on to the moon and home again through our history lessons and reading books and especially a class book. In our reading we read a historical fiction text about a stray dog called Strelka who was plucked from the streets of Moscow to go to the moon. In Maths we are exploring multiplication using arrays and the children have also been introduced to TTrockstars so please do practice.
World Book Day was a great success and below is a small selection of the outfits in Tawny Owl.
We have been practising our dance moves and everyone is very excited about the Dance Festival next week.
Week 5
To round off our topic about First Flight we enjoyed a lovely day at the Aerozone in Stansted learning about some of its history and how the airport operates.
We were lucky enough to be visited by the security dog handler ( fresh off the Prime Minister's plane) who told us lots about the dogs and how they train them.
The children showed off a lot of their knowledge about the history of aviation and were all brilliantly behaved and a credit to the school. All in all a great day! Next week we have a real life pilot coming to visit us!
Week 4
In maths, we have been looking at 2d and 3d shapes, drawing, comparing and finding lines of symmetry. Continuing maths, some children practised their number bonds in Independent Learning time and enjoyed the challenge of a game.
Creative maps in independent learning time and letter writing.
In History, the children became spies today and tried to 'copy' the First Flyer' through small peepholes in the shed it was being stored in. A great way to have them look carefully at the design of the first plane and to practice their team work skills!
We have also been learning a lot about Amelia Earhart and are about to write a fact file about her. Finally, we have begun to practice our dance for the Dance Festival in March - I think everyone has just about got the moves!
Week 3
Welcome to our new blog! I thought I'd add a few photos to let you know what we've been up to. Firstly, we have been enjoying our new library.
We have been learning about the Wright Brothers' life using lots of different props!
And then investigating why we thought they were successful using a diamond 4.
Finally, in our Independent Learning time some children made Big Ben and then labelled it with names of types of transport - in chronological order. Very inspired!
