Physical Education at Manuden Primary School
A small school with big ideas… Growing hearts, Growing minds, Growing dreams!
Our Intent
At Manuden Primary School, we believe that physical education plays an important role in developing healthy, confident and resilient learners. Our PE curriculum aims to inspire pupils to enjoy physical activity, develop fundamental movement skills and build a lifelong love of sport and exercise.
Physical education supports our school vision of growing hearts, growing minds and growing dreams by encouraging teamwork, perseverance, respect and self-belief. Through PE lessons, pupils develop not only physical skills but also important personal qualities such as cooperation, resilience and determination.
We aim to provide all pupils with opportunities to experience a wide range of physical activities and sports so that they can discover activities they enjoy and feel confident participating in throughout their lives.
Our Implementation
Planning and Curriculum Structure
At Manuden Primary School, PE is taught using the Complete PE scheme of work, which ensures clear progression of skills and knowledge from Early Years through to Year 6.
The scheme supports teachers to deliver high-quality PE lessons that focus on developing:
-
Fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing and catching
-
Balance, agility and coordination
-
Teamwork, communication and cooperation
-
Tactical awareness and problem-solving within games
This structured approach ensures pupils develop confidence and competence across a broad range of sports and physical activities.
High Quality Teaching and Staff Development
Teachers are supported in delivering PE through modelling and guidance from specialist coaches and resources. This helps build staff confidence and ensures that teaching across the school continues to improve.
The PE subject leader monitors the curriculum and supports staff to ensure that lessons are engaging, inclusive and aligned with the progression of skills across the school.
Inclusive Participation
PE at Manuden is designed so that every child can participate and succeed. Lessons are carefully adapted so that pupils of all abilities can take part fully in physical activities.
Children are encouraged to challenge themselves and celebrate personal improvement, developing confidence and resilience alongside physical skills.
Assessment
Assessment in PE takes place through ongoing observation and feedback during lessons. Teachers assess pupils’ progress against the key skills and objectives for each unit of work.
This helps ensure that pupils are appropriately challenged and supported to continue improving their physical abilities and understanding of sport and fitness.
PE in the Early Years (EYFS)
In the Early Years, physical development is a key area of learning. Children develop their movement skills through play, exploration and structured activities.
Pupils are encouraged to:
-
Move confidently in different ways such as running, jumping, climbing and balancing
-
Develop coordination and control when using equipment
-
Explore movement through dance, games and outdoor play
-
Begin to understand how physical activity helps keep our bodies healthy
These early experiences provide the foundations for physical development and enjoyment of sport as pupils progress through the school.
PE in the Wider Curriculum
Physical activity is embedded across the school day and contributes to pupils’ wider development.
Examples include:
-
Outdoor learning opportunities that encourage movement and exploration
-
Active playtimes and lunchtime activities
-
Links with PSHE and science, exploring healthy lifestyles and the importance of exercise
-
Team activities and competitions that build cooperation and leadership skills
This approach helps pupils understand the importance of physical activity for both physical and mental wellbeing.
Enrichment and Sporting Opportunities
At Manuden Primary School, we provide a wide range of opportunities for pupils to participate in sport beyond their PE lessons.
These include:
-
Inter-school competitions and festivals
-
After-school sports clubs
-
Opportunities to represent the school in local sporting events
-
Whole-school sporting events such as Sports Day
These experiences help raise the profile of sport across the school and allow pupils to develop confidence, teamwork and pride in their achievements.
